First Children School offers many specialized deaf and hard of hearing educational services for our students:
  • Five certified Teachers of the Deaf on staff
  • Eight inclusive classrooms serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Self contained preschool and primary classrooms taught by Teachers of the Deaf
  • Pull-out and push-in services which add an extra layer of support needed to develop the students’ individual language and communication skills to be successful in the classroom setting and in the community
  • Quiet, one-to-one individualized sessions to develop students’ listening, speech, language and academic skills.
  • School-wide staff training to ensure all staff members can communicate with our Deaf and Hard of Hearing population
  • Amplification of all students regardless of their disabilities to improve their quality of life
  • Education for parents on the various options for amplification and subsequent steps from evaluation through maintenance
  • Staff attendance at audiological appointments with the students and their parents to assist in their understanding and follow through with the usage of their equipment
  • Daily checks of equipment  to ensure children have the tools they need to learn
  • Educational audiologist consulting for  specialized problem solving of equipment issues
  • Staff who are  experienced working with hearing aids, Cochlear Implants (CI), BAHAs, FM systems and Auditory Brainstem Implants (ABI)
  • Multi-sensory approach to promoting  listening and speaking throughout the day and assistance in the students’ development of  their language skills
  • A team approach which  includes our speech-language pathologists who have backgrounds in Deaf Education
  • PROMPT trained therapists
